Interested in using your CS acumen to help fight crime? Cadre is seeking a bright and driven Software Engineer (Bachelors or Masters level) to join our young enthusiastic research group. The Cadre team is distributed across North America. You will be located in our Chicago office. Our group is a hybrid academic/industry lab where high quality research, reading journal papers, and staying current on the latest advances is highly valued.

Please note that currently there are no open Software Engineer positions. Feel free to apply, but note that the likelihood of a response will be extrememly low until a position becomes available.

Description

We are looking for an awesome software developer to join our Forensics team in Chicago. Our main project is the development of a next generation three-dimensional imaging and analysis system for firearm forensics. In short, the system images the 3D marks left on a cartridge case (ie. shell) at micron resolution and then compares these marks to determine if two cartridge cases were fired through the same firearm. We're not going to lie, we work on really cool stuff. Our research partners include local, state, and federal government crime labs. Yes, the big guys who wear suits and dark glasses.

Who We're Looking For

We'e looking for an awesome programmer / software engineer with a bit of scientific computing experience who is interested in learning a lot more. You'll join our small development group for our primary desktop application. We have a long to-do list and not enough hours in the day; thus we're looking to recruit another developer. You'll help design and implement new functionality for our three (related) desktop applications. Your initial focus will be on extending and improving our computer vision / machine vision / machine learning algorithms. These methods are used to compare the geometric similarity of the three-dimensional scans collected by our 3D microscope. You will work with Computer Science PhDs with expertise in Software Engineering, Machine Learning, Machine Vision, Statistics, and Probabilistic Modeling. We won't expect you to be an expert in these areas right away; you'll do a lot of learning with the team. Note: No experience working with firearms is necessary and there are no firearms in our workplace.

Responsibilities

You'll be responsible for developing software around specific focused tasks. Your daily schedule will include working independently, meeting with collaborators, and utilizing opportunities for continued learning. In addition to the 3D imaging project you'll also have the opportunity to work on other forensics applications (such as audio analysis or image enhancement). We're a small startup and if desired you can get exposure to all aspects of starting a business. No regular travel is required but there will be opportunities should you be interested (research conferences and crime lab visits).

Skills and Qualifications

  •  You are a Computer Science or Electrical Engineering major (BS/BA/MA/MS/MEng) with interest and experience in Software Engineering and desktop application development.
  •  You have research or large-project experience in any area of Computer Science (undergraduate project experience counts!).
  •  You are an enthusiastic problem solver who is passionate about making the best software for applications that help improve society. You're interested in working with an interdisciplinary Computer Science research team in an industry setting. You have a strong interest in learning and expanding your skill set.
  •  You have C++ programming experience. Our main application is a C++ QT Desktop Application (using eigen, boost, and opencv). Some development work may entail other languages or environments.
  •  (Optional) You have experience with or interest in 'cloud' computing (eg. AWS). We're adding a few AWS features to our application and you could play an instrumental role in making this awesome!
